Seat Count Argument
Wildrose Member

We’ve been fighting this battle for years—decades, even. We’ve been told over and over again that we just need to be patient, that our voices will be heard, that the system will eventually work for us. But I’m here to tell you something: It’s a lie. Confederation has failed Alberta. And anyone who thinks we can change this system from within is fooling themselves.

Look at the facts. Canada’s political system is rigged against us, plain and simple. The deck is stacked, and no matter how hard we try, we’ll always be on the losing side. It doesn’t matter what we do—Ottawa will never listen to Alberta because they don’t have to. They know we don’t have the numbers, and in this system, numbers are everything.

Let’s break it down.
In Canada, power isn’t decided by what’s right or just—it’s decided by seat counts. The provinces with the most seats control the government, and the rest of us are left with crumbs. Look at the numbers:

  • The Maritimes—a region with less than 7% of the national population—controls 32 seats in the House of Commons. Thirty-two! That’s almost as many seats as Alberta has, even though we produce the lion’s share of this country’s wealth.
  • Quebec? They’ve got 78 seats. Seventy-eight votes in Parliament that get handed over to whoever promises them the most. And you can bet they’re not voting for what’s best for Alberta.
  • And then there’s Ontario—the big prize. They control a whopping 121 seats. They are the kingmakers of every election, and make no mistake, the politicians in Ottawa care about one thing and one thing only: winning Ontario. They pander to the voters in Toronto and Ottawa while treating Alberta like a backwater.

Now let me ask you this: How many seats does Alberta have? Just 34. Thirty-four seats out of 338 in the House of Commons. That’s 10% of the seats, even though we contribute far more than that to Canada’s economy. And that’s the real insult, isn’t it?
While Alberta is treated like a political afterthought, we’re carrying the weight of this entire country. We generate the wealth that keeps this place running. Alberta’s oil and gas industry alone contributes hundreds of billions of dollars to the Canadian economy. When times are good in Alberta, times are good in Canada. But when times are tough for us, we get nothing. No support, no recognition, no respect.

In fact, they kick us when we’re down. They shut down our pipelines, tax our energy industry to death, and expect us to smile and keep sending money to Ottawa so they can continue to bribe votes in Quebec, Ontario, and the Maritimes.

This isn’t a partnership—it’s exploitation!

And don’t think for a second that the media will tell you the truth about this. The so-called “legacy media”—the big corporate media that Ottawa keeps propped up—are nothing more than mouthpieces for the federal government. How can they be objective when the government has spent over $600 million to keep them in business? That’s right—$600 million to make sure that the media doesn’t bite the hand that feeds them.

You think they’re going to question Ottawa’s treatment of Alberta? You think they’re going to expose the bias, the inequity, the unfairness of this system? No. They’re going to keep pushing the same tired narratives, protecting their paymasters in the federal government, while Albertans are silenced and ignored.

And so I ask you, Albertans: Why are we still playing this game? Why are we continuing with this failed experiment called Confederation? How many more times are we going to bang our heads against the wall, hoping that this time—this time—Ottawa will listen to us? They’re never going to listen. The system is designed to keep Alberta weak, dependent, and powerless. As long as we stay in Confederation, we’ll always be at the mercy of the Maritimes, Quebec, and Ontario. They’ll always outvote us. They’ll always control the agenda. And we’ll always be stuck sending billions of our wealth to fund their programs, their promises, and their voters.

And for what? What do we get in return? Higher taxes, a crippled energy industry, and a government that treats Alberta’s contributions as a given—like we owe them something. Well, the Wildrose Loyalty Coalition says no more. No more! It’s time to wake up, Alberta. It’s time to recognize the truth that so many of us have known for years: Confederation doesn’t work for Alberta. It never has, and it never will.

The only way forward is for Alberta to take control of its own future. We can’t keep waiting for change from a system that is rigged against us. We need to break free from this broken confederation and build a new Alberta—an independent Alberta where we control our resources, our economy, and our destiny.

Imagine a future where Alberta’s wealth stays in Alberta. Imagine a future where our government is accountable to us, not to bureaucrats in Ottawa or voters in Ontario. Imagine a future where Alberta is a sovereign nation, standing strong on the world stage, charting its own path, and thriving without the interference of a federal system that doesn’t care about us. That future is possible. But we have to stop playing Ottawa’s game. We have to stop pretending that this system will ever work for us. It’s time to take our place as an independent, prosperous, and free Alberta.

Let’s stop wasting our time fighting a losing battle in a system that’s rigged against us. Let’s start building a better future—a future for Alberta.
